It’s hard not to state at the wildflowers on public lands in Alaska.Over the last few years of glorious adventures, we’ve visited a lot of public lands and taken a lot of favorite National Park photos. While there are (only?) 59 National Parks, there are 417 parks areas including national monuments, preserves and seashores. That doesn’t include land under the Bureau of Land Management or land managed by the Army Corps of Engineers or state parks.

We’re fans of all of it. We don’t really care who manages it.

If you’re curious to learn more about the parks, you can read about the history of the National Parks, or check out Ken Burns’ truly fantastic documentary on the subject (but maybe save it for the winter when you’re not as inclined to be outside).

Throughout our adventures on federal public lands we’ve seen some breathtaking things. At least twice I’ve been so overwhelmed by it that I’ve literally cried.

Here are some of our favorite National Park photos of the things we’ve seen.

Yellowstone National Park hot spring
A hot spring in the Norris Geyer Basin in Yellowstone National Park. We are used to looking at them from the side. This is what you see if you look down.
Wonder Lake, Denali National Park
Wonder Lake sits 85 miles in on the Denali Park Road. Nearby Wonder Lake campground hosts campers in the park’s open season, and is only accessible by the park bus. But if you’re lucky enough to score a Denali Road lottery pass, like we did, you can drive your own vehicle here. And if you’re really lucky, the mountain will be out in all of its glory and put on a show.

The Harding Ice Field in Kenai Fjords National Park. Most of Kenai Fjords is under water or in the winter. This part is not.

Mammoth Cave National Park is gorgeous above ground — and below. This trail in the above ground portion was especially pretty on this very cold day in February, 2016.

Dinosaur National Monument is home to dinosaur bones and wildflowers. We visited on our road trip to Alaska in 2016.

These “ghost forest” trees in Kenai Fjords National Park were saturated with salt water during the 1964 earthquake. The result? They’ve been preserved.

One of our favorite things about Alaska summer is the wildflowers. These were in Kenai Fjords National Park on the Harding Ice Field trail. Behind them is the Harding Glacier.

Just after Christmas, 2016 we took our first trip to Seward, Alaska near Kenai Fjords National Park where we stayed in a military resort. We watched movies, explored the town and enjoyed some winter sun.

  1. Hi, I just found your blog. I look forward to reading more about it. My boyfriend has been to Alaska many times hunting and fishing. We are seriously thinking about moving to Alaska.
